Check and replace your air filters often

Air filters are one of those things that seem like a no-brainer: They keep dust out of your house, but what about the air inside? If you don't regularly take care of your air filter, you could be breathing in some nasty stuff. A study conducted by the American Lung Association found that more than 4 in 10 Americans live in places with unhealthy levels of air pollution.

While there's nothing wrong with changing your air filter once or twice a year, according to the EPA, you should change it more frequently if you live in certain areas or have pets. For example, if you have cats or dogs, you'll want to change your air filter more often than usual because pet hair tends to accumulate in the crevices around your filter. Also, if you're prone to allergies, you might want to change your filter more often since allergens tend to collect in places where they aren't filtered out.

The best way to know how often you should change your air filter is to look at the manufacturer's instructions. But if you're short on time, here are a few signs that indicate your filter needs replacing.

1. Your AC runs constantly.

2. You notice strange smells coming from your vents.

3. Your filter starts making weird noises.

4. You see dirt accumulating on your filter.

Keep your AC and heating systems free of debris

If you have an outdoor unit it is important to keep it clear of debris. Your unit needs to breathe properly to work efficiently. A dirty filter could cause your system to overheat or even break down. Cleaning out the filter regularly helps prevent problems like those.

Check your unit every week or two for leaves, pollen, dust, dirt, sticks or anything else that might block airflow to the system. Remove the debris from the top, sides, and bottom of the unit using gloves and a garden hose. This ensures that there is enough room for air to circulate freely around the unit.

In order to ensure the cleanest system possible, try to avoid blocking airflow to the system. Leave about 2 feet of space around the outside of the unit.

Fall HVAC maintenance checklist: HEATING

Even though summer is still technically here, we know that fall is fast approaching. And while many people think about the weather cooling down and spending less time outside, it's actually the perfect time to take some extra steps to ensure your home stays comfortable throughout the chilly months ahead.

If you're like most homeowners, you probably don't spend much time thinking about your heating system. But when your furnace starts making weird noises or your thermostat doesn't seem to work correctly, it might be time to check out your heating system.

In fact, according to the National Fire Protection Association, nearly half of all fires start in the home, including upholstered furniture, curtains, carpets, rugs, draperies, and even bedding. If you want to keep your family safe this winter, you'll want to pay special attention to your heating system.

So what do you need to look for during your next heating maintenance checkup? Let's go over a few things to consider.

Change filters you use the same filter for both your air conditioning and heating units, it's important to change them now. Filters trap dust and debris inside your home, which can lead to mold growth and health issues.

Make sure the blower motor works. The blower motor is the part of your heating unit that pushes warm air around your house. Make sure it's working properly by turning it on and listening for sounds such as whistling or grinding.
